David Rolt - portraits - Lady wearing a blue jacket
This is another portrait of Mel, the artist’s close friend, later in life. Daughter of the captain of the ill-fated Titanic, Mel was nearly 20 years older than Rolt and already married when they first met. She was an extravert personality, keen on fast cars and flying, but her life was touched by tragedy when her husband died in a shooting accident, her son lost his life in World War Two, and her daughter died from polio. But she remained Rolt’s friend and confidante for the rest of her life.
